This is Tanya Chua’s first Mandarin album. First time I heard her debut Mandarin single 呼吸 (Breathe), I sat up and had a good listen. It was definitely the most atrocious diction I have ever heard on a Chinese radio station! I couldn’t help but wonder who it was, and had a rude shock when I realised it was Tanya Chua, the same gal whom I have admired ever since I heard her play “My colour TV set” during the 1998 New Year countdown.

She has come a long way since and I’d recently heard her conducting a Mandarin interview on 93.3 FM without lapsing into a single word of English. Even though her Mandarin is still tinged with a hint of an “ang moh” accent, she has definitely demonstrated how bilingual Singaporeans can be

Sophomore album from local export, Corrinne May. It’s slightly more pop-ish which might appeal slightly more to her detractors; “Free” sounds like something Sarah Mclachlan might sing. I Like “Little Superhero Girl”, a quirky upbeat song which promotes girl power.

I lay claim to finding this gem before the masses did. The song which drew me to her in this album was “Something about you”. This is because I really liked the Mandarin version by Tanya Chua. On reading up on her, I realised she is a Raffles alumnus (alumna for the feminists), and not just an everyday one; one whom threw off the shackles which accompanies such background. She followed her dreams rather than follow the Singapore Plan (read: study hard, get a good job, marry and set up a family).

Her claim to fame is co-writing the song “If You Didn’t Love Me” with the legendary songwriters Carole King and Carole Bayer Sager as part of her winning entry in a songwriting competition on the music industry website Tonos.com . But my favourite song in this album is “Fly away” which literally brought tears to my eyes after reading the lyrics. Even when I tell its story to new listeners, my eyes well up.

This is a pretty old movie. And not a very memorable one either. The only thing that lingered in my mind long after the movie ended was the soundtrack.

Light Bossa Nova music that will keep your feet tapping and you humming along to the unintelligible words.

Fantastic as background music for any event that you want to keep happy and classy (read: weddings).

My senior from NUS GeYao, Bevlyn, has launched her own album – Lonely Afternoon. Am pretty impressed. I may not like every song in the EP, but there are a few which have severely impressed me.

Track 4 “Play with me” has been playing in my head ever since I saw her perform in the Esplanade Concourse. Am listening to it right now on my desktop.

I will gladly ask everyone to buy a copy to support her, it’s being sold at all Gramaphone outlets (how many are there?). But I really feel that the purpose of her album is not to make money from the albums but rather to make herself known. I think viral marketing by publishing her songs online is the fastest way to get everyone listening to her.

I may be wrong and totally thwarting her plans by sharing the MP3s of her album here, so if you (Bevlyn) are reading this and find that I have misconstrued your intentions entirely, just let me know and I will remove the links.

“Lonely Afternoon” is an EP, containing 6 tracks – 3 Mandarin, 2 English, and 1 upbeat French cover of La Vie En Rose.
