Movies, movies and more movies…

When you have nothing to do, all you can do is watch movies I suppose… Habit picked up in Singapore. Bored? Watch a movie. Sad? Watch a movie. Can’t find anyone to accompany you? Watch a movie. Adore Nicole Kidman? Watch her movie.

Anyway, Tuesday is the day to watch movies. Student price: $6.50. Number of movies: unlimited. Well, not exactly, but whoever invented cineplexes is ingenious. Finish one movie, just walk into the next cinema for your second movie. Takes a bit of research and planning if you wanna catch the entirety of the movies, but that’s not a problem for people like me ;)

Have watched 5 movies these 2 weeks, here are some reviews:

1. Batman Begins

I guess the part about his parents dying is nothing special anymore. Was already done in the first Batman movie. The front part of the movie had very odd editing. Sudden cuts here and there made it very confusing. What they regarded as snappy editing just turned out to be very bad editing. The rest of the movie wasn’t too bad. Katie Holmes wasn’t as pretty as she looked in the magazines. Yes, she’s meant to be down-to-earth, but she came off as dowdy, not good at all.

2. War of the Worlds

Another movie which owes its credit to its actors. Tom Cruise and Daktoa Fanning really pulled it off in this movie. Credible, humane portrayals of the characters from the classic Sci-fi book. It’s really more about the human response to a crisis rather than an all-out alien attack from outer space. Similar to M. Shyamalan’s “Signs” which probably drew inspiration from the “War of the Worlds” book. The famous ending from the book was probably a little downplayed. For people who had no idea what was coming, they would have been shocked by the abrupt ending. But not too bad overall, definitely worth a watch.

3. Madagascar

Another animation movie from Dreamworks. There are some animation movies which target adults and children, and some which target just children. This is probably the latter. The cutesy characters and simple plot didn’t really make for an exciting watch, but there are still a couple of laughs to be had. A good movie if you are just looking for something to relax your mind on a lazy weekend.

4. Fantastic Four

Been a torrent of comic book movies in the past few years. This one’s not too bad when you compare it to really bad ones like Daredevil. The effects are pretty cool, and I’ve always been a sucker for superheroes. This movie lacked an awe-inspiring showdown between the good and evil forces though, which would have put it on my list of must-watch movies.

5. Bewitched

When I first saw the trailer, I’d thought that it’d be a pretty normal movie with a lacklustre plot. I couldn’t be more wrong. It’s worse than normal, and the plot was absolutely horrid if it could be considered as existent. Maybe I’m too harsh. But I am a HUGE fan of the old series. Elisabeth Montgomery was fantastic as Samantha, and even though I am a fan of Nicole Kidman, even her cute antics couldn’t save the movie. Definitely a waste of time. That’s 2 hours of my life I’d never get back :(

Survival

Got back from Brisbane on Thur, 30 June. Drove through what must have been one of the worst storms in Gold Coast for the past 30 years, causing a terrible flood in the area. The rain pelted the car incessantly for the 12 hours we were driving back. We could barely see more than 5 metres ahead of the car for most of the journey. Luckily we had Agnes, the garang truck-racer. Took us through most of the storm, at the expense of Kelvern’s poor heart :)

I took turns with Agnes, and would have driven more, but I had trouble seeing well at night. Yeah, think I’ve got partial night-blindness. Well, anyway, both of us are now certified truck-racers, be it Brisbane-Sydney, or Canberra-Melbourne, we’ve tried it all :D

The trip to Brisbane was fun, best of all was the trip to Dream World. The weather dampened the area but not our spirits, it was really really fun, in spite of the rain, or maybe Because of the rain, hmmm. The drive was terrible, but oh well, everything comes at a price.

3 people died in the flood so far, caused by flash flooding in the area. Australia is a pretty dry country, not used to holding so much water at one shot. The drainage just couldn’t handle it. Just hope I won’t have to go through it again.
