Superman Returns

Thursday, June 29th, 2006 at 1:26 am

It’s been a long time coming… The last Superman movie was Superman IV: Quest for Peace in 1987. Been 19 years since then. I loved Superman as a kid. So powerful, yet so alone. Yes, I realise I was pretty dramatic for a kid.

Bryan Singer helms this production. He had to forsake X-Men 3 for this movie, which is a waste because the X-men trilogy is now marred by an inept attempt by Brett Rayner instead. But I am glad Singer made Superman such a treat for everyone again. Superman III and IV were crap, so it’s high time someone did some justice to my favourite superhero.

It has all the necessary ingredients: Love, drama, thrills, special effects, hunks and babes… Truly one of the better movies this year :)

A cryptic movie that doesn’t resolve…

Anyone who has read the book will not wonder why it has been on the international bestseller list for the past few years. Controversial, and thought-provoking, this well-written thriller is a fantastic work of fiction. Mind you, I say work of fiction, so spare me the long christian tirades on how this book is bullcrap.

But alas, the movie falls short of the same amount of awe that the book inspires. Perhaps it’s the high expectations everyone has; great plot, stellar cast… it has everything going for it. Puzzles have been simplified because it’s impossible to go into lengthy explanations in the movie, Tom Hanks wasn’t given much room to showcase his powers of emoting, and the pace of the show was so monotonous, you had no idea the climax was over. A metaphoric case of premature ejaculation – still pleasurable, but could have been better.
