2nd audition – Ai Qin Hai (爱琴海) 27th Mar 2007

Saturday, March 31st, 2007 at 7:09 am

Was exhausted that day. Stayed up Monday night deliberating over which songs to sing, but had to get to office by 9am the next day to finalise my tender submission for the audio labs. Slept 2 hours in total.

The tender was a nightmare, didn’t even get to take my lunch. Voice was hoarse by afternoon and I was on the cusp of lapsing into sleep. Finally finished my tender documents. Took a cab home, but still had 1.5 hours to spare. Was afraid I might fall into a deep slumber if I sat down. Went for a jog instead, that should give me the warm up I need to sing later.

Did 1 round around Ang Mo Kio Park, then went home to shower before taking a cab down to Ai Qin Hai. Didn’t dare sleep else I would lose my voice when I woke up. Worked with Hao Yuan to find the keys for my songs. In the end, I sang 我只是想要 by Weilian for my slow track and 爱的就是你 by Lee Hom for my fast track. The song they chose for me was 流沙 by David Tao.

Must thank all my students for coming down to support me: Dexun, Weng Tat, Victor, YY, Yuan Ching, Wei Ping, Lai Peng. Thanks for the overwhelming support! :D

The following recording consists of the latter 2 songs. Courtesy of Ming Cong (Thank you!):

Auditions – A dream from a decade ago

Friday, March 23rd, 2007 at 2:25 am

I’ve finally auditioned for the position of singer at a Ming Ge Can Ting (民歌餐厅) namely Music Dreamer (爱琴海). This is something I had wanted to do since I was in CLDCS Ge Chuang (歌创) back in RJC. Somehow the timing was never right, and I didn’t feel ready when I was in NUS either. Studying in Canberra was even more out of the question. But now I’m back in Singapore and ready.

I knew they were auditioning on Monday, 19th Mar, but was too lazy to register beforehand. So I was shopping for furnishings at Marina Square, and decided to pop in and see whether they were still accepting registrations, and they were! Cost me $15.75.

I decided to do Yi Shou Jian Dan De Ge (一首简单的歌) by Lee Hom since I’d already practised that for FRM (the Radin Mas CC Youth Group chorale). I had no lyrics, but luckily I had my tablet with me, so I downloaded the lyrics and copied it over to a crumpled piece of paper.

There were 30 contestants in all, I was #21. Went to East Zing to buy my Winkplay wall decals before popping back into the cafe. The 5th singer was singing by then.

Some of the singers were good, enough to make you stop talking and listen. Some were cocky (heard this guy criticising all the singers on stage, but was himself really sucky when he sang), some were lame (very VERY bad attempts to be humorous while bantering with the emcees).

I didn’t speak much when my turn arrived. Just wanted to do my thing and catch a movie afterwards. Had a quick run-through with the guitarist about the arrangement (he was Ying Ying’s friend), and just sang. My voice did not betray my nervousness at all, quite impressed with myself. But it was probably due to the fact that I had the lyrics with me, so I wasn’t afraid I might forget my lines, as is usually the case. Could sense the level of noise lower and people were actually watching and listening to me sing, haha, self-high!

Finished my turn, then waited out 2 more singers before I caught the cocky singer disgrace himself on stage. Then I hurriedly left to catch 300 at GV.

Updates…

Friday, March 23rd, 2007 at 2:09 am

It’s been a while since I updated my blog, sheer laziness as usual. What’s there to tell? Hmmm…

(28th B-day celebration – Debbie, Tak, Me, Wee Horng, Sing Yuan)

1. I am now 28, edging ever closer to the big Three-O
2. I have shifted in to my new place, which still isn’t ready for open house yet as my mum will testify (“Aiyoh, so messy…”)
3. Have been working in RP for more than a year now, enjoying the job
4. Seen my students graduate, it’s quite satisfying and slightly melancholic
5. Heavily in debt (thanks to my flat), and looking out for money-making opportunities

Very stereotypical late-twenties thoughts I suppose.
