Unfathomable minds

Homer's Brain

What goes through a person’s mind? I’ve only ever had the privilege of using one brain, and that’s obviously mine. Does the rest of the world think the same way as me? Surely not, else we will probably still be living by candlelight.

My brain works fairly well, evident in assorted test results over the years. Intelligence isn’t really something to be proud of, just the luck of the draw I suppose. It’s like winning a Core 2 Duo computer in a lucky draw while some others draw a Pentium 2. And then there are the luckier ones who draw supercomputers for their brains.

How about self-awareness? Is that linked to intelligence? Are EQ and IQ completely separate entities? I’ve seen some really smart bastards, while the Forrest Gumps are always portrayed as nice and sweet. That’s the part that stumps me. If you’re intelligent, and you’re being an asshole, surely you can see quantifiable signs around you that inform you that you’re being an asshole. Do you not know? Or do you not care? I have to assume that it’s the latter, you probably just lack the empathy to do something about it.

Going by the same reasoning, people with low IQ might tend to have low EQ. They possess empathy, but just don’t know when to use it. On the other hand, people with higher IQ can fake high EQ, because they can behave in a fashion that is expected of them regardless whether they have enough empathy at all. Woe to the people with lower intelligence and lacking empathy. Are these then the petty robbers who rob and maim? The people who don’t think and can’t feel.

Why am I ranting about this? Because there are people in my life who seem to lack self-awareness. They live in response mode. They don’t initiate nor do they reflect. The same action will always draw the same reaction without fail. Even if you have quarreled about it umpteen times. It’s a tiresome movie that keeps replaying itself. You may hit the pause button for a while, but eventually the movie plays on. My finger hovers over the eject button…

Got something to say?
