This is Tanya Chua’s first Mandarin album. First time I heard her debut Mandarin single 呼吸 (Breathe), I sat up and had a good listen. It was definitely the most atrocious diction I have ever heard on a Chinese radio station! I couldn’t help but wonder who it was, and had a rude shock when I realised it was Tanya Chua, the same gal whom I have admired ever since I heard her play “My colour TV set” during the 1998 New Year countdown.

She has come a long way since and I’d recently heard her conducting a Mandarin interview on 93.3 FM without lapsing into a single word of English. Even though her Mandarin is still tinged with a hint of an “ang moh” accent, she has definitely demonstrated how bilingual Singaporeans can be
